About Us
What Is Extended Care?
Montrose Place is South Africa's leading extended care facility for the treatment of addictive, compulsive and co-morbid disorders.
Extended care, or extended primary care, is the name given by our team at Montrose Place to the period of residential treatment that follows a primary treatment programme or detoxification process.
At Montrose Place we believe it is essential to take a long-term view of the recovery process. It is now widely recognised in both the medical and psychotherapeutic community that a 28-day programme in isolation will have a limited impact on a chronic relapsing illnesses such as addictive and compulsive disorders. The extended care programme at Montrose Place is 90 days in duration.
More About Extended Care
The length of the treatment programme depends on the client in question. The length of a client’s stay at Montrose Place will be determined on admission and re-evaluated as appropriate.
In the first stage of residential extended care treatment at Montrose Place, the client focuses on maintaining abstinence and navigating daily life without the use of any mood-altering substance, behaviour or relationship. During this vital period, co-morbid psychiatric conditions (see co-morbid and mood disorders) may also become apparent. An undiagnosed co-morbid condition or mood disorder can impinge enormously on the recovery process. When effectively addressed, the outcome of treatment can be greatly improved.
In the middle phase of extended care treatment, with the team's expert guidance and support, the individual begins to explore the underlying causes of their illness and address issues leading to its perpetuation.
The extended period of residential treatment that is provided at Montrose Place affords the client the opportunity to understand how to access the rewards available through self-care community movements such as the 12 Step programme.
Renowned, though often misunderstood, 12 Step support-groups provide a powerful source of information, support, strength and hope to those recovering from addictive and compulsive illnesses. These programmes are widely available, low-cost and effective adjunct resources to professional treatment. At Montrose Place, our clients are encouraged to attend a variety of such groups in order to initiate a practice that may be continued after discharge, providing vital assistance in the days, weeks and years that follow.
The final weeks of extended care treatment at Montrose Place, are dedicated to extensive relapse prevention planning to ensure that by the date of his or her discharge, the client is fully equipped to be the guardian of their own recovery process. This concluding phase of residential treatment is a period of fledgling recovery in which the client can take steps towards independence - taking ownership of their daily timetable from within the contained environment of Montrose Place.
